Videoconferencing

I think that Meebo could be especially beneficial to foreign language instruction. One thing about Meebo that I like most is that the program allows us to have videoconferencing with native speaker. Thus Meebo not only provides an opportunity for authentic audience, but foreign language learners could be exposed to authentic input when engaging in conversations with native speakers. Meebo provides opportunities for negotiation of meaning, practicing pronunciation, exchanging of cultural information, and identifying gaps in the language through output activities.

  1. That's a good point Miglena, the video conference could be set up like a pen pal. Either one on one or in groups, giving the students the native English and non-native English audio input. In turn this will help improve their listening skills.

  2. Miglena, would you ever use it for your German classes which are about as GFL as it gets? Do you see any problems with using video conferencing?

  3. I would like to use videoconferencing for the German class that I teach. I think that this could be a great way for students to engage in a conversation with native speakers, and be exposed to authentic input.
